SiCarro/No-deposit car rental in El Salvador

No-deposit car rental in El Salvador

On SiCarro, the deposit isn't set by the platform: it's set by the car's owner. Some ask for nothing, most ask for $10 to $50, and it's paid in cash when you pick up the car. Here's how it really works, and how to pay less, or nothing at all.

Who sets the deposit, and why SiCarro doesn't collect it

SiCarro is the marketplace: it connects the car owner with the renter, handles the booking and the rental payment, and that's it. The platform doesn't collect the deposit, hold it, or refund it. That's on purpose: as long as the money never goes through the platform, no rental depends on us keeping up our end.

The deposit is set by the provider, which is why it varies from car to car. In practice, you hand it over in cash when you pick up the car and get it back in cash when you return it, after the inspection. That's the model that works in El Salvador: local payment processors can't pre-authorize or hold funds on a card, so the temporary hold you'd get at an international rental agency simply isn't possible here.

What the deposit is for

It covers what the rental itself doesn't: a dent, a traffic ticket that shows up weeks later, an empty tank, an extra day without notice. It's the owner's protection, and it's also why so many owners are willing to rent their car to a stranger.

If you return the car in the same condition you got it, you get the full deposit back. Most of the deductions we see come down to three things: missing fuel, a car returned dirty, and scratches that weren't on the handover report. Go over that report, with photos, before you drive off.

How to pay a smaller deposit, or none at all

  • Search by provider, not by price: some don't ask for a deposit on short rentals, and you'll see that on the car's listing before you book.
  • Rent for more days. The owner's risk per day goes down, and so does the deposit they ask for.
  • Complete your profile before you book: upload your driver's license and DUI (Salvadoran national ID). A verified renter has more room to negotiate.
  • Ask on WhatsApp before you book. The deposit is agreed with the owner, and many will be flexible if you explain your situation.
  • Return the car clean and with the same fuel level. It's the simplest way to get 100% back.

How much it costs to rent a car in El Salvador

These figures are measured on the cars listed on the platform today, not brochure rates. The $160 and $600 are premium models; half the fleet rents for $50 a day or less, and some cars require no deposit.

The price you see on the listing is the final price. No "mandatory insurance" suddenly appears at the counter, which is the most common surprise at airport rental agencies.

Price per day$16$50$160

What documents you need

  • A valid driver's license. A foreign license is fine for short stays.
  • Your DUI if you're Salvadoran, or your passport if you're visiting.
  • A debit or credit card to pay for the rental online through SiCarro.
  • The deposit, separately and in cash, paid directly to the provider at pickup.

How to book, in three steps

  1. Pick your date and pickup location, and browse the available cars with their price and deposit.
  2. Open the car's listing and read the provider's terms: deposit, mileage, fuel policy.
  3. Book and pay online. You'll get a confirmation and the provider's contact info to arrange the pickup.

Frequently asked questions

Are there cars with no deposit in El Salvador?
Yes. Some providers don't ask for a deposit, especially for short weekday rentals. They're a minority of the fleet: the deposit is shown on every car's listing before you book, so you can rule out the ones that don't work for you.
Does SiCarro collect or hold the deposit?
No. SiCarro charges for the rental and nothing else. The provider collects the deposit directly, in cash, at pickup, and returns it when the car comes back in the same condition.
Can I leave the deposit on a card instead of cash?
Not with local payment processors. In El Salvador, pre-authorizations and temporary holds on a card, which is what international agencies use, aren't available. That's why the deposit is paid in cash at pickup.
When do I get my deposit back?
When you return the car, right after the inspection, on the spot and in cash. If you return the car clean and with the same fuel level, you get it all back.
What determines the deposit amount?
The provider and the car. Across the current fleet it ranges from $10 to $600, with a median of $50. Premium models and new renter profiles tend to come with the higher amounts.
Can I rent without a credit card?
Yes. The rental is paid online, and we accept debit cards. The deposit, if the provider asks for one, is paid in cash and never goes on a card.
