SiCarro/Cheap car rental in El Salvador
Cheap car rental in El Salvador
Half the cars we list rent for $50/day or less, and today fifteen go for $30/day or less. The cheapest one is $16. Here are the real prices, where they come from, and how to bring them down even further.
Real prices, measured today
These figures come from the fleet listed on the platform, not brochure rates. Budget cars are almost always gas-powered compacts, automatic or manual depending on the car, with air conditioning.
The daily price doesn't tell the whole story: two cars with the same rate can ask for very different deposits, and you'll feel that difference at pickup.
| Price range | Cars available |
|---|---|
| Under $20/day | 1 |
| Under $25/day | 3 |
| Under $30/day | 15 |
| Under $40/day | 38 |
| Under $50/day | 64 |
The cheapest car isn't always the best deal
Right now the cheapest car in the fleet is $16/day with a $200 deposit. A 2021 Nissan Sentra goes for $27.99/day with a $50 deposit. The second one costs $12 more per day, but you need $150 less in cash on pickup day.
You get the deposit back in full when you return the car in the same condition, so it isn't a cost: it's money tied up for the length of the rental. It's worth comparing both numbers before you book, especially for a short trip.
How to get a lower price
- Book ahead. Budget cars are the first to go during Holy Week (Semana Santa), in July and August, and in December.
- Rent by the week or the month. Part of the fleet lists weekly and monthly rates on the car's page, and they work out better than seven daily rates.
- Rent on weekdays. Friday and Saturday are the days with the fewest budget cars available.
- Choose a gas compact over a pickup or SUV: lower fuel consumption and, often, a lower deposit.
- If you can, pick up the car in the city instead of at the airport. Delivery at the Departures Terminal of SAL airport is still possible when the provider offers it.
What the price includes, and what it doesn't
- It includes the car rental for the days you booked, with pickup and return arranged with the provider.
- The listing price is the final price. No "mandatory insurance" suddenly appears at the counter, which is the most common surprise at airport rental agencies.
- It doesn't include fuel: the car comes with a certain level and goes back with the same.
- The deposit is separate and paid in cash to the provider at pickup. The platform doesn't collect it or hold it.
What about road trips outside the city?
A compact gets to El Tunco, El Zonte, La Libertad, Suchitoto, and the Ruta de las Flores via the CA-1 with no trouble. To drive up to Cerro Verde or the Santa Ana Volcano, the road is paved but has tight curves and steep grades: a sedan can handle it, but an SUV is more comfortable, especially in the rain.
If your itinerary includes dirt-road beaches or farm roads in the eastern part of the country, look at SUVs before you go with the lowest price.
Frequently asked questions
- What's the cheapest car available today?
- Today it's a 2017 Kia Rio at $16/day, with a $200 deposit. The fleet changes every week, so check the search with your dates before you decide.
- Are there hidden fees on budget cars?
- No. The price you see on the listing is the final rental price. The deposit is separate: it's paid in cash to the provider and returned when you bring the car back in the same condition.
- Why does a cheap car sometimes require a bigger deposit?
- Because the deposit is set by the car's owner, based on their risk and past rental experience, not on the price. Two cars with similar rates can ask for a $50 or a $200 deposit.
- How much does it cost to rent for a week or a month?
- Part of the fleet lists weekly and monthly rates on the car's page, always lower than multiplying the daily rate. If the car you want doesn't show one, ask the provider on WhatsApp before you book.
- Can I pay with a debit card?
- Yes. The rental is paid online by debit or credit card. The deposit, if the provider asks for one, is paid in cash and never goes on a card.
