It is known worldwide for its consistent surf waves — the reef break at Playa El Tunco works practically year-round, with the best conditions between March and October. The town has a main street full of hostels, restaurants, bars and surf shops, with a cosmopolitan vibe that attracts both experienced surfers and travelers looking for beach life and nightlife. Having your own car in El Tunco lets you easily explore the neighboring beaches: Playa Sunzal (5 min west, bigger waves), Playa El Zonte and Bitcoin Beach (15 min west), and Punta Roca in La Libertad (15 min east, world-famous). The drive from San Salvador is direct: take the highway toward the port of La Libertad then the Litoral westbound. The road is paved and in good condition. Parking is available at most hotels and hostels. A car also gives you freedom for excursions to Walter Thilo Deininger National Park (20 min) or buying fresh seafood at the La Libertad port market.
