How to get to El Tunco by car

El Tunco is 45 minutes from SAL airport and an hour from San Salvador, on paved, well-marked roads. Here are both routes, real drive times, and why most people heading there to surf rent a car instead of relying on public transportation.

The two routes

Coming from the airport is the easiest drive: leave the terminal, take CA-2 west, and you'll be on the beach in under an hour. From the capital, the road goes through La Libertad and winds down to the coast with ocean views along the way.

What the road is really like

The whole route is paved, and most of it is two lanes. You don't need a 4x4: a compact sedan will get you there just fine, even with luggage and boards properly strapped down.

Two things to plan around: leaving San Salvador at rush hour, which can add half an hour, and the rainy season, from May to October, when it's best to drive in daylight and give yourself extra time.

Why almost everyone rents a car

  • Parking in El Tunco is easy: hotels and hostels have space, and the town itself is walkable.
  • With a car you can get to El Zonte, La Libertad, or the pier, and come back late without depending on a bus.
  • You can bring your boards without paying for extra transportation or risking them on someone else's roof rack.
  • The airport is right on the way: you can pick up the car when you land and drop it off before your flight.

What the car costs for this trip

For two or three days in El Tunco, a compact from $16/day covers the whole plan: airport, beach, El Zonte, and back. Among the cars listed today, half rent for $50/day or less, and 5 require no deposit.

If your trip continues on to the Ruta de las Flores or Santa Ana after the beach, look at SUVs: the drive up to Cerro Verde and the Santa Ana Volcano is more comfortable in one, although a sedan will make it too.

Before you hit the road

  • Check the fuel level and the pickup inspection report with photos, especially if you'll be returning the car at night.
  • Confirm the return time with the host if you have an early flight.
  • Save the host's contact in your phone: they're your go-to if anything happens on the road.
